Photography guide to La Fortuna and Arenal Volcano

La Fortuna is a small town with an enormous mountain next to it. That combination means almost any walk ends in a good frame, but not every spot works the same for a photo session: light, walking time and crowds all change.

The eight locations I use

• Downtown La Fortuna: streets, the plaza and small-town life. Ideal if you're short on time or arriving late.
• Arenal Volcano viewpoints: the full cone in the background, best early in the morning.
• La Fortuna Waterfall: stairs down, water and deep green; it's a walk and it's worth it.
• Mistico Hanging Bridges: forest at canopy height, filtered light and vertical perspectives.
• Arenal Volcano National Park: trails, lava flows and open views.
• Arenal 1968: a trail over the historic lava flow, with volcano and lake in the same frame.
• Parque La Fortuna: the central park, simple and very comfortable for families with small kids.
• Your hotel: the most relaxed option, especially for babies, maternity and larger groups.

How to choose

My advice runs opposite to what most people do: pick the memory first, not the location. If what you want to remember is the volcano, we go to a viewpoint early. If it's water and forest, the waterfall or the bridges. Travelling with small kids or older adults? The central park or your hotel gives better photos, because nobody arrives exhausted.

Arenal's weather changes fast, and that isn't a problem: mist and soft rain make beautiful images, and the sky often clears early in the morning.
