The familiar postcard is Playa Bávaro, and it works: pale sand, palm trees and turquoise water. But the trip gets far more interesting when you add Santo Domingo's Colonial Zone and the countryside ranches.

Three different registers

  • Beach: very hard light at midday; the best photos are at sunrise and sunset.
  • Colonial Zone: stone, shade and narrow streets, excellent for portraits.
  • Countryside: merengue with güira and tambora, food and people; that's where the most honest portraits come from.
